The weight of the BBs affects range, accuracy and wind resistance. The general rule: the higher the muzzle velocity (FPS) of the replica, the heavier BBs you should choose — this increases flight stability. Bear in mind that airsoft fields and various ASG events usually have limits written in their rules that must be followed. Before choosing BBs, find out the limits that apply where you usually play. Typically, for indoor/CQB play the limit is about 1–1.2 J on target BBs (usually the maximum BB weight is 0.28 g). (We quote FPS for 0.20 g because all power figures on our site are measured with those BBs.) For outdoor/woodland games limits are usually in the 1.2–1.9 J range; there are generally no limits on BB weight, but for assault rifles the maximum BB weight commonly used is 0.32 g.
A few practical notes:
- Heavier BBs hold their trajectory better and are less affected by wind → improved accuracy at distance, but they often produce higher energy (J).
- For replicas used in CQB (short ranges), lighter BBs such as 0.25 g are often sufficient.
- Always use good-quality BBs (e.g. BLS, GUARDER, S&T, PJ, KILO9).
ASG fields have different power limits and rules for various replica types (pistols, CQB replicas, assault rifles, DMRs, sniper replicas) — check them before you arrive.
If you have questions about choosing BBs or compatible batteries/magazines, check the product description or contact customer service.
